Have you ever looked in the mirror and began to fret over the fine lines on your forehead? If so, you are not alone.

Fine lines and wrinkles on the forehead are among the top concerns for our customers (and us too). If you’re increasingly frowning because of the fine lines on your forehead, read on. We cover what causes forehead fine lines in the first place, how realistic it is to expect them to disappear completely, and what you can do to minimise their appearance.

WHAT CAUSES FINE LINES ON FOREHEAD?

Ageing
Ageing is the leading cause of fine lines on the forehead and other areas of the face.

As we age, our skin loses elasticity and our collagen production decreases. The middle layer of our skin, the dermis, becomes thinner and thinner. Decreased collagen and elastin with thinning causes the skin to develop fine lines and wrinkles.

And because our skin is thinning, it also slowly loses its ability to retain moisture, it becomes slower to heal, and it becomes less efficient at secreting good oils.

These factors make our skin even more prone to developing fine lines and wrinkles.

UV Damage
When your skin is exposed to excessive amounts of ultraviolet or UV radiation, your skin prematurely ages.

UV light breaks down our much-loved collagen fibres, which affects both the production of collagen and elastin. When your skin is exposed to UV light, it responds by producing an enzyme called metalloproteinase, which helps your skin to fix the collagen.

But when this enzyme is released, your collagen fibres become confused, and they can’t always reorganise themselves to work together with the metalloproteinase.

This causes your skin to try and rebuild collagen over and over again, and with each try it becomes more and more inefficient at doing so, causing your skin to wrinkle in the process.

Facial Expressions
Another unavoidable cause is contracting your muscles for a facial expression. Frowning, smiling and other common facial expressions all cause muscles to contract and the skin to wrinkle. Unfortunately, gravity only makes this worse and over time, together these two factors cause wrinkles.

Smoking
Much like when your skin is exposed to UV radiation, smoking makes it harder and harder for your skin to produce new collagen. And as mentioned above, a lack of collagen causes wrinkles and fine lines.

HOW TO REDUCE FINE LINES ON FOREHEAD
Let’s move into the information we all want to know, how to reduce fine lines on the forehead.

We’ll split this up into two, how to prevent wrinkles from occurring and how to reduce fine lines that already exist.

Preventing Fine Lines on Forehead
There are two things you can do to prevent fine lines from forming on your forehead.

Wear an SPF 50+ Sunscreen
The first is wearing an SPF 50 every single day. We’re sure you’ve heard it before, but an SPF 50 is a must. Sunscreens that are 50 factor will protect your skin from both UVA and UVB damage. Anything less isn’t protecting you adequately from both kinds of radiation.

Sunscreen will help to prevent or slow down premature ageing caused by the sun. Meaning you get to hold onto your collagen fibres for longer and retain that youthful plumpness!

Microneedle For Prevention
There are so many benefits for microneedling, the biggest being it stimulates your skin to produce lots of collagen.

So why not stimulate that collagen production to prevent wrinkles from even occurring? By getting in early and microneedling your skin, you can have a continuously strong cycle of collagen production to minimise pre-existing wrinkles and prevent new ones.

Reduce Fine Lines on Forehead
Now, let’s explore the ways you can reduce the fine lines that already exist on your forehead.

Microneedling
Yes, microneedling will treat current fine lines and help prevent future ones! The collagen production that microneedling sets into motion will kick your skin into high gear and flood your forehead with collagen.

This collagen will help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. Depending on how deep your wrinkles are and how your skin heals, you may need anywhere from two to eight microneedling treatments to see results.

What is exciting about microneedling the forehead is that because the forehead doesn’t require a robust depth (unlike our squishy cheeks), you can see results with a shallower needle depth. Whether you choose to microneedle or cosmetically needle your forehead, you’re likely to see some improvement!
